The sole reason for my trip to Kozhikode was to experience authentic Malabar cuisine in the most authentic manner. The local eateries, though invariably crowded, are the best places to do this. The first stop was at the Rahmath Hotel for lunch, famous for its Biryani varieties; the mildly spicy Beef Biryani is undoubtedly the best bet here. A long but patient queue is the trade mark of this small and basic restaurant! But just forget the ambience and dig deep into the delicious Biryani.
The Kozhikode Beach is the place to be around sunset. For here is some fantastic street food from the mobile counters lined across the pavement. Sipping the black tea Sulaimani, and watching the sun go down is a great experience. Kaada Mutta (chilli-coated boiled quail eggs) and Ari Kadukka (fried mussels with a rice coating served with the shell) are recommended.
Aadaminte Chaayakkada (Adam’s teashop), one of the most talked about and latest additions to Kozhikode’s long list of eateries, was the destination for dinner. The ambience and decor are, like the food they serve, tasteful and full of soul. Besides, the local names of the dishes served will surely bring a smile to your face!
Next morning, I skipped the lavish breakfast at the hotel and instead chose a heavy but delightful brunch at the iconic Paragon Restaurant. Watch out for their fluffy appams (string hoppers) best accompanied by the superb Fish Mango Curry. And if you have room left for more, do try their signature Mutton Biriyani marked for its unique aroma, flavour, and short variety of rice used.
