Nestled against the backdrop of some of the most beautiful yet accessible Himalayan peaks, the Western Hills offer many a panoramic sight. Terraced farming fields carved out of mountain faces, roaring gorges and perilously perched hill-top villages are all part and parcel of the topography of the Western Hills. The phrase, ‘living off the land’ seems to take new meaning as you visit the prosperous pastoral communities living in the villages of the Western Hills.
It is also one of the most densely populated hill regions in Nepal.
The Margar and Gurung communities are predominant and some of the villages seem to be exclusively inhabited by them. Of course, Tibetans, Newari merchants, and other ethnic groups are also to be found – together, they have created a colorful cultural kaleidoscope.
As you go about exploring the Western Hills, you are likely to spend some delightful time sorting out the so-called problem of plenty. Most travelers head straight to the serene lakeside resort of Pokhara and the more adventurous ones hit the trekking trail to the Annapurna range on the north. Paragliding is also a very popular sport here, while the ones seeking some soulful time have many avenues for yoga and meditation.
Before heading to Pokhara, check out some of the other captivating locations, especially the magnificent trio of sightseeing attractions formed by the pilgrimage site of Manakamana, the historic fortress of Gorkha and the grand old bazaar of Bandipur. Beyond Pokhara, on the southern edge of the hills, lies the endearing town of Tansen – another travel gem waiting to be explored!
