Dayal Bagh Temple, Agra under construction for over a century, finally opened its doors at Agra on November 06, 2018 on the occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of the Radha Soami cult founder Shiv Dayal Saheb or ‘Swamiji Maharaj’, whose remains lie here in a samadhi (memorial tomb). Set amidst lush green open gardens, its architectural brilliance fills one with wonder. This 110-foot-high, intricately carved and pillared structure made from marble acquired from Makrana’s famous marble quarries in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, with accents of Jaisalmer yellow stone and Baroda’s green stone, and portraying fine pietra dura (marble inlay) work, is nothing short of splendid. As per legend, Swamiji Maharaj had a vision in 1861 to build a temple at the most fertile spot in the city. Over the last 100 years, generations of workers and sect leaders converted this dream into reality, purely through donated funds. The Radha Soami sect believes in the concept of sewa (service) and community living. It is devoted to several charitable causes, educational institutions, hospitals, small scale industries and healthcare services.
