Onam Date: September 1-13, 2019 | Place: Kerala. The festivities which are spread out over 13 days, are an integral part of Keralite culture and tradition, and bring family and friends together in harmony. As per popular legend, the Asura King Mahabali was humbled by Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Onam is celebrated every year on King Mahabali’s annual visit to his kingdom from the netherworld. People dressed in all their new finery offer prayers at temples and install an idol of Onathappan in their homes decorated with flowers and kolam (evocative patterns on the entrance of homes made with stone and rice powder), cook traditional feasts (Onam Sadya comprising 11-13 dishes served on a banana leaf), and exchange gifts. Onam festivities include vibrant and masked dances (Pullikkali or the Tiger Hunt dance - an ode to heroic valor and manhood), colorful pageants, and scintillating Vallamkalli (snake boat races) – the most thrilling highlight of the festivities, held at pampa river before a frenzied crowd of onlookers, the most significant ones being the Aranmula Uthrattathi boat race and Nehru Trophy Boat race.
