SURFACE TRAVEL

It is the most convenient way to cover large distances in India, with ease and comfort. All the major cities and tourist destinations are connected by air. There are also chartered flights and helicopter flights to less accessible areas in India. The airlines use a variety of aircraft but most of them are from Boeing and Airbus.

Luxury transport
In India there is no dearth of world-class car rental services catering to your needs. You have plenty of options to choose from well-maintained cars ranging from luxury cars to standard cars. Added to this, the services of professionally trained drivers are also ensured.

Among the luxury car category, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi lancer, Toyota Camry are the favorites. For group travel the world class Volvo buses are available.

Standard transport
A whole lot of comfortable cars are available in India. The standard cars offered are Ford Ikon, Maruti Esteem, Honda City and Toyota Qualis. For groups locally manufactured buses are available which are extremely comfortable and reliable.

Besides there is a whole range of SUVs, 4-Wheel Drive Vehicles and Mini Vans and Coaches.

It is important to remember, while deciding on a vehicle, that at most times the front seat is occupied by either an escort or a tour guide.

It is pertinent to familiarize yourself with the rules of the road in India. Some of the important ones are as follows:

We drive on the left-hand side of the road.
The cars including the rental cars are right-hand drive vehicles.
All distances, speed limits (and speedometers) are in kilometers.
Wearing of seat belts is compulsory for front passengers.
You cannot use hand-held phones while driving.

Petrol (gas) stations are situated on both main and country roads. Most of them are open round the clock. Indian petrol stations are not self-help. A helper will check tire pressure, oil and water, and fill the car, if necessary, clean the windscreen.

After the railway, surface transport is the chief means of travel in India. It is a viable option to rent a car in cities. In Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and other major cities, metered taxis as well as luxury cars are easily available on hire. You can hire a car for a full day or for a destination.

Self drive cars are hard to come by as the government does not issue licenses for these. Valid documentation is an International Driver’s License. Taxis and three wheeler auto rickshaws are ubiquitous in the Indian urban and even semi rural landscape. Most small towns have motorcycle rentals.
