Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi's Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author and literature, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Benaras, once wrote: "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together" .
To every visitor; Varanasi offers a breathtaking experience. The rays of the dawn shimmering across the Ganges… the high-banks; the temples and shrines along the banks bathed in a golden hue …soul stirring hymns and mantras along with the fragrance of incense filling the air…and the refreshing dip in the holy waters gently splashing at the Ghats. Varanasi – the land where experience and discovery reach the ultimate bliss.
There are three ways to explore Varanasi- by foot, boat and Rikshaw- and you will probably find yourself using them all. Most visitors agree that the best time to appreciate the life of the city is during the 'Subah-e- Banarasi' or early morning. Rent a boat around six in the morning and cruise along the misty shore line to witness a panorama that has played out everyday for centuries. You will see men and women wading into the cool waters for their morning prayers and ritual baths. Behind them bells will ring out from the temples and ashrams that soar above the river.
As you move along the ghats you will pass through many of them starting with Assi and Tulsi ghat, Jain Ghats, Ram Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat, one of the two cremation places on the river front. Leave your boat behind at Dashashwamehdh ghat to delve into the bazaars of the old city. Walk through the lanes and by lanes to reach Alamgir mosque built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb atop a Hindu temple. Travelling through the lanes of Varanasi, you will notice everywhere one of the mainstays of the city’s economy: the textile industry.
Every tiny lane of Varanasi contains a story and a legend. Be it a small shrine, temple or a haveli with a history waiting to be discovered.
